Broken Manual in Berlin

I’m thrilled to announce that Broken Manual will be opening on Friday, June 10th, at Loock Gallery in Berlin (6-9pm). To accompany the exhibition, Loock Galerie will present Somewhere to Disappear, a film by Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove about the making of Broken Manual. The screening takes place in the Berlin cinema Arsenal on Friday, 10 June, at 5.30 pm.

Due to a respiratory illness (fricking whooping cough!) I regret that I’m unable to travel to Berlin for this extraordinary night. I’d give anything to be there.

Here is Luiz from Rio/Brazil and a Broken Manual book client, your book is a most commented one down here.

  2. Hi Alec,
I liked so much your exhibition in Berlin. I was browsing around the galleries at Halle am Wasser and at Loock I was literally struck by your show. I wrote about it on the blog illywords as the theme of the month is “the Dictatorship of the Consumption” (http://www.illywords.com/2011/07/alec-soth-broken-manual-at-loock-galerie-in-berlin-stories-of-broken-men-in-america/) and your men escaping from the society and from their families, where they do not find a refuge, were very significant to me.
I am very curios about one point. Why did you look only for broken men and not for broken women? I guess there are a lot out there.
Thank you in advance for your reply Alec and thank for realising art projects like this!

  3. Hi Manuela, thanks for the kind words. There are certainly women who have the same desire to run away. I have a hard time explaining why I’ve chosen to make this gender specific. All I can say is that it has less to do with logic than it does with a instinctive creative compulsion.

  4. Hi, thank you for your answer. I understand.
I always think that a woman thanks to her maternal instinct and to the possibility of giving birth to another person to love, can still keep a stronger attachment to society, to the conventional world. When I walk on the street and I see homeless people, my feeling of sadness towards women is defenetly more intense. If women are broken are “more broken” than men? … anyway, thanx a lot for your work. It made me think a lot. Ciao!
